AI is no longer a theoretical discussion. It’s already embedded in day-to-day workflows across industries, often quietly supporting decisions, reducing friction, and giving professionals back the time they rarely have. What’s becoming increasingly clear, however, is that the value of AI doesn’t come from replacing people. It comes from supporting them.

We attended techUK’s “AI Vision to Value Conference: Delivering the UK’s AI Opportunities Action Plan”, an event focused less on AI hype and more on a harder question: how do we actually turn AI capability into real-world value?

We attended a set of GDS-led workshops exploring the emerging GDS Tech Stack and what it could mean for local authorities delivering modern, joined-up digital services.Across two sessions, From Principles to Practice: Service Standards for Better User Journeys and Data Focused Architecture for Joined Up Services, a consistent theme emerged:The intent of the Service Standard is strong, but the practical implementation across local government is still fragmented.

In developing software, we often work in different environments, which helps us separate out data and allows for testing away from live data used by customers. Separating environments also allows us to test more freely and do controlled releases of new features where some users can test out the feature, find any bugs, and give feedback before they are fully released. Environments are a combination of the data they have access to and the code being run.

We had the opportunity to attend the Home Office Digital Early Market Engagement on behalf of Shape. The session provided valuable insight into how the Home Office is approaching digital delivery and where it is seeking support from technology suppliers.The engagement covered five key areas:Business ArchitectureDevOpsUser-Centred Design (UCD)Product ManagementSecurity ArchitectureOur primary focus was on User-Centred Design and Product Management, as these are core areas where Shape specialises and where we believe we can add the most value.

What they don’t tell you is that it leads to context switching, inconsistent results and tool fatigue.

We chose Flutter for our frontend framework of choice, and it is part of our preferred tech stack when we work on projects because our clients are SMEs, and they need to deliver more, deliver faster, and deliver well. Flutter offers SMEs the ability to deliver applications on multiple platforms, but only have to invest the time to develop one codebase that has a consistent user experience.

Data is a massive topic. Literally. Over 400 million terabytes of data are generated globally every single day. Sensor data from IoT (Internet of Things) devices, user-generated videos on platforms like Snapchat and TikTok, as well as enterprise data, all contribute to the vast quantities of data, and that number is only growing.
